Exercise is as addictive as booze and fags, say scientists

The Guardian
It's now official. Some joggers may become addicted to running just as other people become hooked on cocaine, tobacco or booze, according to new research today. The proposition that exercise can trigger a "high" based on brain chemistry has been around for decades. But there has been less research into what happens when the trainers are locked away and the tracksuit sent to the cleaners. Now a team from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has confirmed that not pumping iron or pounding the pavement could trigger telltale changes in neuronal activity. They watched mice manically sprinting on exercise wheels and then measured withdrawal symptoms when they are kept off the treadmill.
"In the high running mice, certain brain regions displayed extremely high levels of activity, more than normal," said one of the researchers, Justin Rhodes. "These were the same brain regions that become activated when you prevent rats getting their daily fix of cocaine, morphine, alcohol or nicotine."
He and colleagues at Wisconsin report in the December issue of Behavioral Neuroscience that they worked with two populations of laboratory mice.
Some were normal or "couch potato" mice and others were marathon mice, a special breed selected over 29 generations for their enthusiasm for exercise.
Scientists were surprised to find that mice prevented from running showed surges of neuronal response. The more compulsive the urge to run, the higher the surges when the treadmill was locked away. These surges were the equivalent of cocaine cravings in human drug addicts.

Someone really should note that The Guardian is British, so "fags" is a slang term for cigarettes.

I'm not into alcohol or cigarettes, but exercise is very easy for me to give up. I constantly have to work at getting myself to do it. This sounds suspect.

Then there was the Frenchman who said, "Whenever I get the urge to execise, I lie down until I feel better."

I have to force myself to go out and do it now (last 20 years mostly sedentary) , but when I was 20 years old and in military grade shape, a good run would create a 'runner's high', which was clearly an endorphin release. The sensation was an extreme euphoria and feeling of great strength.

In my thirties I ran a lot of road races every year. I had, just as recommended, "incorporated exercise into my lifestyle." At 38, still trying to do the same routine, I went over the hill and blew out my durability. It was very frustrating. Almost 54 now, I run a maybe two miles every other day, a fraction of what I used to.

Careful there, pretty soon there will be a runner's tax along with outlawing excercise in several states!

I ran 12 miles yesterday morning, 10 today. I'm not hooked. Ran two races last week. I'm not addicted. Honest.

Not sure how the double post occured. Maybe I am addicted.

I've noticed the fags hanging around the weight room. They don't seem to do much working out, for all the time they spend there.
I'd rather sit at home and drink beer than parade around the shower room wrapped in a towel.

I exercise at least an hour a day. It gives me energy and makes me feel good. I can again fit into the same size I wore 10 years ago. If it is addictive, it is a pretty good addiction.

I know what they are talking about here. I've been swimming and lifting weights for many years. While I would never say that it is as addictive as cocaine or morphine (though I don't know - I've never taken either one recreationally), I don't feel right if I'm not exercising heavily.

Consider yourself lucky that they're wearing towels.

Fags are addictive? That must explain why there are so many homosexuals.

I'm Assuming "fags"="cigarettes"That's so funny. I remember my late uncle calling them that.
My 79 year old mom HATES the fact that homosexuals took the term "gay". She said, growing up, that word was used so much in reference to fun and happy things.
